We are devoting a day to exploring colors and how our eyes perceive them.
Blur and stain using the science of chromatography. We’ll see how different molecules move at different speeds, revealing the hidden pigments in colors. Turn your creations into a book you bind as a special keepsake.
Get colorful with crayon art. Safely melt crayons that drip into beautiful shapes and mix to make new colors that might be unexpected. Create your own scratch art with crayons!
Mix colors without paint! Build a Benham’s disk top and learn how black and white spinning designs are processed by the three kinds of cones in your eye to bring colors into their spinning action. Flip it over to make a Newton’s color disc and see how to erase colors!
Our day will be filled with experimentation to see what other new things we can learn about the science of colors!
We are getting into gear and going fishing to start Engineers Week (don’t worry, we will be indoors). Using simple mechanisms, campers will build a fish that bobs up and down as it is pulled along the floor. Build the inner workings of a mechanical fish that appears to swim along as you reel in your catch.
"We cannot live only for ourselves. A thousand fibers connect us with our fellow men."
-Martin Luther King Jr.
MLK Day is a time for us to celebrate our continual commitment to community and connections. Join us this year to honor the Assemblage Art of Betye Saar. Participants will build a reliquary to help tell their own story. By collecting found objects from the museum's vast collection, campers will curate their personalized collages.
Each camper will contribute to a Little Free Library that will live on the Museum campus for all to share.
We hope you will all visit this Community Project and hopefully bring a book and take one!
“I am intrigued with combining the remnant of memories, fragments of relics and ordinary objects, with the components of technology.”
- Betye Saar
