Like interchangeable parts, the lattice truss bridge was meant to solve a problem: as its population and settlements expanded rapidly, America needed lots of roads and lots of bridges. However, bridge-building was a highly skilled trade and each bridge was uniquely designed for its location. Traditional bridges also required large amounts of long, heavy timbers, which were expensive and required skilled woodsmen to find and prepare. Town’s bridge, however, could be built with a lattice of simple boards, which meant it required less skill and no special timber. Its strong structure also meant it was highly adaptable and able to span impressive distances. The design proved extremely successful, and Town sold plans up and down the East Coast.
