For the April Vacation we will explore the culture, stories, art and mechanics of Time. The week complements the 24th Leonardo Challenge which also explorers the meanings of Capturing Time.
Each day will consider an aspect of Time with experiments, creative challenges, inside and outside investigations and play(weather permitting). Programs run 9-3. Before and after care are available.
The programs run from 9am – 3pm.
Fee per day: $65 ($60 for members)
Before and after care (7:30 am – 5:30 pm) is available at $8 per hour.
April Vacation: Keeping Time
For the 9-12 year old programs, some introductory information…for a special structure. For the 6 – 8 year olds, it will not split this way. See the descriptions below to see information about all classes.
This Spring’s Leonardo Challenge has focused our explorations in time. Not so long ago, young mechanics distinguished themselves by taking clocks apart. Today, clocks without springs, gears, or any visible mechanics keep and govern time. Alex Tavares has designed artful and simple circuits to introduce the 555 timer, the integrated circuit chip that is the engine of electronic timing. Construction introduces components (the chip, resisters, capacitors, etc )and soldering both for future engineers and for future poets. This is an opportunity to explore the chip that makes our world tick.
Each afternoon, construct fun and funky pendulums, the old school (think Gallileo & Newton) timers that gave modern science its beat. Also: take apart clocks, Thank you: Yankee Clock Peddler*.
