The A.C. Gilbert Company was always looking for new innovations in the educational toy market, and they sold a wide range of products over their more than 50-year history, from building blocks for young children to glassblowing sets. They also occasionally branched out into other products that related to their metalworking and electrical expertise, particularly small home appliances. In 1921, as part of a short-lived effort to make and sell radio receivers, they established WCJ, the first licensed radio station in Connecticut.
