Jaamal Benjamin

Jaamal Benjamin (b. 1983, Brooklyn, New York) is a graphic designer, artist, and educator.  

He is fascinated with rhythm and the ways in which visual communication affects culture and community. Jaamal’s work forefronts ideas and stories of the African diaspora through the use of form, color, type, and sampling. He samples books employing found language and image to create large-format indigo-dyed collages.

Jaamal’s independent design practice is StudioGrand, a visual communication studio which synthesizes craft, culture, and graphic design to broadcast ideas. 
StudioGrand specializes in visual identity, type/letterform design, exhibitions, and publications.

Jaamal received a MFA in Graphic Design from Yale School of Art (2025) New Haven, Connecticut and a certification in type design from The Cooper Union (2021) in New York City. Jaamal lives and works in New Haven, CT. He is currently a visiting professor at Wesleyan University in Middletown, CT and has previously taught at The Cooper Union in New York City.
