2011 Summer Program
Renaissance Italy produced new art and new science. In his book Ingenium, physicist Mark Denny looks at five essential machines perfected by science. Construct a working (small scale) long bow, a windmill, a clock escapement, a trebuchet and a fly-ball governor. Follow Denny's clear and good humored explanations of the physics of each. Learn what physics is. And ask: did physics design these machines? Or did the machines design physics. Then create your own steampunk application for your machines: your own unlikely futuristic application of an early invention.
