The art of fabric decoration is ancient. Basically, since people started twisting and weaving fibers together thousands of years ago to make the first fabrics, they have been embellishing them in as many different ways. Techniques that were used to decorate the body began to be applied to the earliest fabrics that were developed. Two basic methods emerged: coloring (directly applying an image with color to the fabric) and patterning (painting or printing with resists in patterns and then coloring the fabric). We will experiment with just a few of these methods to produce a tote bag or pack.

Learn to paper piece a five pointed star. Border that star with indigo over-dyed up-cycled cloth. Several techniques will be taught exploring appliqué, sashiko, and fabric printing. Then sew a lined tote bag to show off your fabric art.
