2014 Summer Program

Think of all the reasons to play outside: light, color smells, playing, hiding, exploring, quiet wondering. Those are the experiences that sculptors who work outside want to touch. Look at some famous artworks you might find outside: by Isamu Noguchi, Robert Smithson, Natalie Jeremijenko, Andy Goldsworthy, Maya Lin.

Experiment with materials that are happy outside: stones, bamboo, sticks, sand and mud. Each morning, construct a maquette?, a small study sculpture in a new material. Each afternoon, join a team that will work on a large piece that will spend the summer at the Museum. Make art to last and art to change like the seasons. Learn to let your senses play. With guest visits from the Museum’s sculptor-in residence: Susan Clinard. With an early celebration of International Mud Day.
