August 25, 2013: Voyager 1 left our solar system.

Your mother was not likely your age in 1977 when Voyager 1 was launched at Cape Canaveral. The first Star Wars movie had just premiered. The Apple II computer was beginning to make home computing a possibility. The state of the art computers that are still guiding Voyager had a tiny fraction of the power of the last smart phone you touched. But a great adventure was beginning. Voyager, the size of a pickup truck, continues to travel more distant reaches than any other manmade object.

Map Voyager's expedition to the edge of our Solar System. Construct a model of the planets that Voyager surveyed and left behind. Mark a timeline of the 36 year journey to understand the vast distances of space travel. Create a message for new worlds after Carl Sagan's beautiful gold plated Voyager pictograph. Look at the pictorial record Voyager created for us. Learn some adventure stories.

The Hopkins School has sponsored scholarships for this class.Hopkins values intrepid explorers.

Instructor: Josh Revkin and Hopkins students.
