 The
Eli Whitney Museum in Hamden Reaches back to the 1939 World's
Fair for it's 14th annual train exhibition.Rail was an emblem
of the Fair. Sleek, streamlined locomotives exuded speed and power.
American rail was at it's zenith. It shaped commerce, communication
                and communities. In
'39, there's no question that to be close to trains was to be
close to cutting edge technology Today, we look on it as a more
concrete technology than what we have now. Sixty
years ago, New Haven's A.C. Gilbert had become the world's largest
manufacturer of learning toys. The new bridges that laced New
York City to the Nation echoed Erector Set constructions that
began in Fair Haven. Gilbert introduced the Royal Blue, a streamlined
American Flyer locomotive that was the hope of his companies future.   |
