The Quinnipiac (meaning “people of the long water land” in the Quiripi language) and their ancestors inhabited what is presently the Quinnipiac River Watershed in South Central Connecticut. Like other indigenous peoples of the Northeast, the Quinnipiac utilized the environment’s resources on a seasonal basis hunting, farming, fishing and using natural materials in their crafts and constructions.
Join us on Indigenous People’s Day to learn some of the history of these indigenous people from our area as well as weaving a basket and carving a wooden turtle. Using traditional reed and new techniques, weave a basket. Next, carve and sand a wooden turtle and learn the lore behind the turtle shell and how it is utilized as a lunar calendar in Native cultures.
