As we celebrate the centennial of A.C. Gilbert's Mysto Magic Company, we look at the chemistry set for magic that Gilbert produced in the 1920's. Reproduce tricks that Gilbert designed…with safety goggles, rubber gloves, special ventilation and expert supervision (none of which are mentioned in the Gilbert Manual by the way.) You will be surprised and amused by basic reactions, the wonders of chemistry, and the miracle that any child survived that age of braver parents. 10am – 12pm (2 hours only)

Learn about the many different customs around the world. Then demonstrate 5 customs on the faces of the base. Perhaps make clothespin figures that dance in wild costumes (South Africa), or swim in icy water (the Netherlands,) or don red underwear (Venezuela,) or ring bells (Japan,) or greet the sun (Korea,) or wear polka dots (Philippines,) or break piñatas (Mexico) or light fireworks (United States.)

The English scientist Neil A. Downie, has written three volumes of Saturday Science Projects. His designs are remarkably original and thoughtful. He explains the math and science of every experiment…On a level for advanced high school or college students. But our project designers, Alex Leffell, Mark Wesolowski and Tyler Hayslett have adapted (hacked) his ideas for you. Construct a motor experiment tool kit with two motors, a battery pack, a potentiometer (to control speed) that will test four Downie designs: a robot arm, a checker catapult, a vibrating climbing ring, a dancing brush. Then adapt the parts for your own experiments. 9am – 3pm

Construct a mini Theremin…a simplified version of an electronic instrument invented 90 years ago. This design was developed by Jay Silver at the MIT Media Lab. It's as much fun to play as it is to build. Accessible for beginners, rewarding for experienced builders. With an introduction to the oscilliscope, soldering, and Theremin music.
