This year we will sample projects from kindred spirits who explore the learning challenges we find exciting. We want to try out their teaching, their tricks, their techniques. Think: familiar ingredients…fresh recipes.

Extended day hours will be available from 7:30 am to 5:30 pm at a rate of $8 per hour.

Columbus Day 2012

One hundred fifty years ago, Mary Henrietta Kingsley was born to George Kingsley and Mary Bailey. Her father was a physician and adventurer. His library became her school. When both her parents died, Mary set off to explore Western Africa in part to complete his work, in part to best his accomplishments. The journal of her adventures is still in print. You will find her thoughts clear, direct, and inspiring.

MAKE* it here. India – The Learning Toys of Arvind Gupta

Arvind Gupta began designing clever experiments for children in India 30 years ago. He devoted himself to the Village Science Movement. He set out to design exciting, accessible experiments. Resources were scarce. Dr. Gupta learned to employ cast off materials (plastic bottles, straws, scrap wire, tape etc.) with remarkable ingenuity. The internet gave him an inexpensive channel for sharing his genius. Cleverly, his presentations speak the many languages of India by choosing images and not words. From the 400 projects we have reviewed, we have gathered a dozen for you to explore.

Construct the world's simplest electric motor and a remarkable slide horn. Then, choose two more projects from Dr. Gupta's world: a spinning pump, a soap geometry toy, a CD spectrascope, an unlikely balancing bottle, or new and different paper tricks. Learn that the best of instructions only work with your attentiveness and adjustments.

Election Day 2012: Get Out the Volt!

The Frankenstein story, first published by Mary Shelley in Eli Whitney's time, has come to life again as it seems to every four years. Perhaps it's a reminder that we must be galvanized to keep the awkward machinery of government moving by the spark of the vote.
