Four hundred years ago this month, an Englishman captaining a Dutch ship set out to find a northwestern passage to India. Instead he found an island that would be named for its native inhabitants: Manhattan, and a river that still bears his name and a sad end.

Galileo's Marble

Columbus explored the seas. With the same navigation tools, Galileo explored the heavens.

Four hundred years ago, the Italian mathematician Galileo constructed a telescope and turned it toward the heavens. He changed the way we thought. Galileo was a gifted experimenter. He used marbles to identify the laws of motion. To understand marbles, he had to play with marbles. After all, marbles already know the laws of motion.

Four hundred years ago, the Italian mathematician Galileo constructed a telescope and turned it toward the heavens. He changed the way we thought. He invented a science of observation. He was an artisan scientist who made his own instruments. The fee below reflects an additional charge of $25 for the purchase of a Galileoscope for each registrant.

Gilbert Magic

One hundred years ago, A.C. Gilbert graduated from Yale. He chose not to pursue the career in medicine he had prepared for. He returned to a passion he had developed when he was 8 years old - magic. He loved the preparation, the practice, and the performance of prestidigitation: nimble fingers. Construct tricks for handkerchiefs. Make thing disappear into them. Make them disappear and reappear. Juggle them. Learn to cut and restore them. Build a simple magician's case to carry your tricks.

Astro Boy and Cora

Veteran's Day was established at the end of the First World War to remember those who had served their country and to hope for a future of peace. Just after WW II, Osamu Tezuka created Tetsuwan Atomun (Mighty Atom), a young robot full of courage to face the dangers of modern technology and villians with unconquerable confidence. Called Astro Boy in the United States, the intrepid robot is still a boy at heart after 50 years. Construct and launch your own Astroboy with Estes Rocket engines. Construct Cora with her own substantial powers. Explore the beginnings of the world of Manga.

Sewing Wild Winter Things

Design your own hats, scarves and mittens using warm and cosy fleece and our versatile new Janome sewing machines. (The picture is a bit blurry up there but Lena's itching to go out and play in Karen's new hat and gloves).

Martha Burns will guide you through through the steps of pattern making, cutting, and sewing your custom made winter wear. You could Make a Wild Thing hat to express the inner monster in you or you can design a gift set for someone else. (Even your dog I suppose. Tho Lena tried to eat hers). Design with plaid and be right in with this year's new styles.
