In 1868, waterwheels, steam engines, and an occasional windmill powered the machines of the Industrial Revolution. New ideas have to be expressed in increasingly clever arrangements of pullies, gears, and levers. That year, Henry T. Brown collected the best of these arrangements in a practical visual dictionary: 507 Mechanical Movements. In 150 years, it has never gone out of print.

Master some of Brown's mechanical vocabulary with hand-cranked, single-movement machines. Invent creative applications for them. Then combine 3 of his machines in a little compositions. Create a robot to dance to it. Each with unique moves.

Your work will help advance our year-long celebration of this treasury of mechanical engineering.

507 Mechanical Movements is available free on Google Books. Copyrighted animations are available here: http://507movements.com/
