Melissa is currently a PhD student in the art history department at Binghamton University, where her research focuses on ancient and modern Roman architecture. She joined the Eli Whitney Museum thirteen years ago as an apprentice, and since 2011 has developed and taught classes for the museum’s summer program, often collaborating with the education department at the Yale University Art Gallery. In her spare time, Melissa co-writes a food blog, 5 Degrees of Preparation, with another former apprentice.

In her classes, Melissa emphasizes the powers of observation. She encourages her students to really look at the world around them, and guides them to make meaningful connections with art, nature, and other people in a language that makes sense to each individual child, often using art as a tool for studying the past and the present world. Melissa seeks to create a supportive and collaborative learning environment where students are comfortable experimenting, asking questions, sharing ideas, and working together.
