2017 Summer Program

When I first started teaching programming classes, I wondered: where are the girls? I asked myself: have there ever been girls? This class is an introduction to many of the incredible women I "met" in the history of computer programming.

Meet Grace Hopper. 75 years ago she studied mathematics at Yale. She served in the Navy. She helped translate the number vocabulary of computers into words. This year Yale named a College after her. Meet Ada Lovelace. 160 years ago she helped write the first computer program. Meet women artists, actresses, mathematicians and philosophers who helped build our digital culture.

Try a game, a challenge, or an exercise to play with an idea that was part of the work each woman did. You won’t need special math or long computer experience. You will need the playful curiosity that made these women (and us) unafraid of the new.
